Winter Sports
Insurance
At this time of year skiing is at the forefront of many
people's minds but there is always some concern about whether
the snowfall will be sufficient. This year has already seen a
good fall of snow which was sorely needed after last year's
poor showing.
By its very nature, skiing and snowboarding can be dangerous
and that is part of the excitement and it is not uncommon for
many accidents to occur each season irrespective of the
experience level of the person involved. Owing to the nature of
skiing injuries, it is important to ensure that you are
properly covered with a winter sports insurance plan
and not just rely on standard travel insurance unless it
specifies that skiing is catered for (usually for novices and
those who are intermediate).
Insurance companies that supply travel insurance know that
novice and intermediate skiers will more than likely be on a
well patrolled slope if an accident does occur. It is the
accidents that occur of the regular runs for those individuals
who are more experienced and require a greater challenge to
their skiing or snowboarding skills. This is where the unwary
can very quickly become unstuck and we are not talking about
the snow conditions so most winter sports insurance policies
will have restrictions when venturing from the regular
runs.
Conditions such as ‘only with a guide or ‘only within a
specified resort area' are the norm, so when seeking that
adrenaline rush it is important to know what you are getting
yourself into first. With other forms of skiing and
snowboarding activities like ‘half pipes' and ‘free style',
serious accidents are more likely even though they are becoming
very popular.
To make sure you are properly covered for these more extreme
sports activities, it is essential that winter sports insurance
is obtained that offers protection to this level of activity.
You may find your current travel insurance will cover you for
winter sports but this may be limited and will not cover
certain activities you may be planning although many companies
will allow you to upgrade your travel insurance to include
winter sports that do not fall within the policy.
You may find it easier just to source an insurance provider
that has organized a ‘bespoke' winter sports package as this
may provide everything you need without the worry of checking
every detail of your current travel insurance. Injuries and
accidents aside, a good winter sports insurance package will
also provide remuneration should anything else unforeseen
happen like the loss of skis or when the resort has been forced
to close.
The problems experienced with winter sports enthusiasts is
when they are more experienced as regular travel insurance will
not cover them for the types of skiing they wish to enjoy but
these are the areas where the costs when accidents happen,
mount up. Winter sports insurance is designed to help should
the worst happen but this cannot be done if you decide you do
not need the insurance cover and ignore common sense.
